Session Types Explained
What are the session types in DailyPB? What type of session should I pick? What's the difference between the session types? What does each session type mean? What is a Virtual Event? What is a Team Event? Which session type is right for me? What type of event should I create?
When you create a session, the first thing you choose is the type of session. For most types this is simply a label that tells players what kind of play to expect. A couple of types actually change how the session works. This page explains all thirteen.
You pick the type in the Type of session dropdown on the first step of creating a session (see Creating a Session: Every Option Explained).
Types that change how the session worksβ
Which session types are different? What is a Team Event? What is a Virtual Event? How does a virtual event work? Do any session types behave differently? Which types aren't just labels?
Two types do more than label the session:
- Team Event: instead of signing up one by one, players join or create teams. You set the number of teams, players per team, and a price per team. Players manage their own rosters, benches, and free agents. This is a whole flow of its own, covered in Team Events.
- Virtual Event: for an online session that isn't tied to a physical location (a webinar, a video lesson, an online clinic). Because there's no venue, two things happen automatically:
- DailyPB sets the location to a built-in "Virtual Event" placeholder and hides the venue picker: you don't choose a venue.
- Since it isn't tied to any place, a Virtual Event shows to everyone regardless of where they are, instead of only to players near a venue. It appears on the daily and weekly schedules for all users and in the Weekly Court Report email.
Types that are format labelsβ
What is open play? What is a clinic? What is a round robin session? What is league play? What is a fundraiser session? What is a tournament on DailyPB? Are the other session types different? What does drilling group mean?
The rest of the types don't change anything about how your session runs. They're really just used for search and display: they describe the format of play so players understand what to expect, and so your session can be found and grouped correctly. Pick the one that best fits your session:
- Open Play: standard drop-in play; players sign up individually for an open session. The most common type. See Creating Open Play Events.
- Intro Clinic: an introductory lesson aimed at newer players.
- Drilling Group: a session focused on drills and skill repetition rather than open games.
- Clinic: a coached lesson or skills session.
- Tournament: a competitive bracket-style event.
- Round Robin: a format where players rotate through and everyone plays everyone. (To actually run and score a round robin during the session, use the Round Robin & Ladder app: that's separate from picking this type.)
- League Play: a recurring competitive league.
- Club Play: play organized for a club or regular group.
- Fundraiser: a session run to raise money for a cause.
- Special Event: anything that doesn't fit the other labels.
- Private Session: labels the session as a private/one-on-one or small-group session.
Picking the right typeβ
Can I change the session type after creating it? How do I change my session type? Which session type should I choose? Do I have to get the type right the first time? Can I switch from open play to a clinic?
You set the type when you first create the session, in the Type of session dropdown. If you're ever unsure, you can adjust most of a session's settings later by opening it and choosing Edit Session.
